Dubai International Airport

Dubai International Airport is located just east of the city of Dubai. It has experienced rapid growth since it opened in 1960, particularly in more recent years, with an average annual growth rate in terms of number of passengers of 15.5 per cent. The airport consists of three terminals and has a total capacity of 75 million passengers annually. Construction of the airport was ordered by the ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, in 1959. It officially opened in 1960 with its first airfield, at which time it was able to handle aircraft the size of a Douglas DC-3 on a 1,800 m (5,906 ft) long runway made of compacted sand. Its first asphalt runway was opened in 1965. It currently served by two runways. Interestingly, Terminal 3 is the second largest building in the world by floor space and the largest airport terminal in the world.
