In the north of Laos, riverside Luang Prabang has a serene and mystical vibe. Visitors flock here yet it hasn’t lost its sleepy town feel, and UNESCO World Heritage status protects the gorgeous buildings. See golden-roofed Buddhist temples, faded French-colonial mansions and traditional wooden houses, all backed by the Mekong River and hazy mountains. Daily life starts early here with the sacred tradition of Tak Bat (the giving of alms), when rice offerings are made to the temples’ saffron-robed monks as they silently make their way through the city. The senior monks come past first, followed by novice monks that can be as young as eight years old.
For its size, Luang Prabang has an impressive number of temples. Highlights include The Royal Palace, Wat Mai – known for its golden stencilling – and Wat Xieng Thong, where there’s a huge ‘tree of life’ mosaic. At sunset, hundreds of tourists and locals climb the 300 steps to beautiful Wat That Chomsi on Mount Phousi to take in the views of surrounding temples and hills.
After a day of temple exploring, you’ll need refuelling. Luang Prabang has a quality food scene, with French and Indian restaurants sitting alongside eateries run by some of Asia’s top chefs. Go local with the likes of miang khams (bite-size leaf wraps), chicken-stuffed lemongrass and purple sticky rice, all washed down with a Beer Lao. There are some great cooking schools around the city too, often in a peaceful riverside location.
The night market here is one of the best in South-East Asia. It’s buzzing but friendly – the main road that runs straight through the middle of Luang Prabang town is closed off to vehicles and really comes alive after dark. Dine on all-you-can-eat buffets and fruit shakes, then haggle politely with the hill tribe traders for local fabrics, bamboo lanterns and bags of Lao coffee to take home.
Out of town, a trip to the Kuang Si Falls is a must. Take a 45-minute tuk-tuk ride to a magical spot in the lush jungle where beautiful three-tiered turquoise pools and cascading waterfalls await. Take your swim gear – you can take a dip in these remarkable natural swimming holes – and climb the trails that lead to the top of the waterfall, with lovely views over rice fields on the way. You can also take a leisurely river cruise upstream from Luang Prabang to the Pak Ou Caves, which sit high above the riverside and have hundreds of small wooden Buddha statues inside.
Luang Prabang has a lot of choice when it comes to boutique hotels. Stay at Amantaka, a colonial masterpiece based under Mount Phousi, or lay your head at the city’s original luxury hotel: Belmond La Résidence Phou Vao.
