The province is scattered with breathtaking landmarks. Visit the world-famous MògÄo Grottoes, where nearly 500 cave temples carved into the cliffs above the Dachuan River house one of the world’s most important collections of Buddhist art, including beautifully preserved Buddha statues and sacred paintings dating back to 336 AD. Located at a religious, cultural and intellectual crossroad along the Silk Route, this extraordinary site once attracted monks and nuns, artists, translators and calligraphers. Other key cultural sites include JiÄyùguÄn Fort, the largest entrance to the Great Wall of China a crucial pass on the ancient Silk Road; and Giant Buddha Temple, where a 35m-long sleeping Buddha peacefully reclines.
Located on the banks of the Yellow River, GÄnsù’s capital city LánzhÅu was once a major seat of Buddhist learning and is now an important industrial centre. Here you can uncover the region’s fascinating Silk Road history at the GÄnsù Provincial Museum, admire ancient temples during a stroll through Wuquanshan Park and tuck into the city’s signature LánzhÅu beef noodles while perusing colourful night markets.
Key city landmarks include the White Pagoda, a hilltop temple overlooking the river; Waterwheel Garden, where you can view traditional waterwheels that once irrigated the surrounding farmland; and the Yellow River Mother Sculpture, which depicts a mother and baby in homage to the river’s nourishment of generations of Chinese people. It’s also well worth visiting the nearby painted caves and temple at Binglingsi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that dates back to 420 CE.
GÄnsù isn’t just a region of cultural treasures – it also offers its fair share of natural wonders. Visit Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park, marvelling at the brightly-coloured hills dubbed ‘Rainbow Mountains’. This kaleidoscopic phenomenon is the result of red sandstone and mineral deposits building up over millions of years and is a truly awe-inspiring spectacle.
